Why we built this

Moving in with roommates involves a lot of trust — and a lot of awkward money conversations. The most common source of resentment isn't the messy dishes or the loud music. It's rent. Specifically, whether the split is actually fair.

Equal splitting works when rooms are equal. But what happens when one person gets a master suite with a private bathroom and walk-in closet, while another gets a small room with no closet and a basement view? Equal splitting means the person in the small room is effectively subsidising the person in the big room — and that tension builds over time.

What makes this different

Fair Rent Split gives you three calculation methods — equal split, proportional by square footage, and fully weighted by room features — with a transparent, line-by-line breakdown for each one.

The breakdown is the key part. Instead of handing roommates a number and hoping they trust you, you can show them exactly how it was calculated: this room gets a +100 premium for the private bathroom, that room gets −50 for the basement location, and so on. When the math is visible, the conversation shifts from "why should I pay this?" to "do we agree on these weights?" — which is a much easier problem to solve.

Privacy by design

Fair Rent Split runs entirely in your browser. No data is collected, no accounts are created, and nothing is sent to any server. Your calculation lives in the URL — that's how sharing works too. If you close the tab, the data is gone unless you saved the link.

We think financial tools should be private by default. You shouldn't have to hand over your email address to find out how to split your rent.
